Formerly employed by Polish anti-terrorism agencies, Kiel is now a mercenary working for a private military firm. In Soulcatcher, he accepts a lucrative mission in a nation run by a local warlord along with his brother Piotr. Despite the work appearing straightforward, it turns out that they must deal with a risky experimental weapon.
Directed by Daniel Markowicz, the movie wastes no time getting into the action. Within the first 15 minutes, Kiel and Piotr find themselves in a tense standoff that establishes the risks of their job. Markowicz keeps things moving at a quick pace throughout. There are also some intriguing twists that kept me guessing as to how the mission may unfold.
Piotr Witkowski and Jacek Koman are believably intense as the siblings forced to work together despite a complicated past. Their complex dynamic adds layers to what could have been a straightforward mercenary story. Jacek Poniedzialek is also effective as the unhinged warlord paying for their services.
While the plot isn't particularly original, Soulcatcher works because of the strong performances and Markowicz's skillful direction. He orchestrates several high-octane action sequences that had me on the edge of my seat. I also appreciated how the movie questions the morality of profiting from conflict. It leaves the audience with meaningful ideas to ponder long after the credits roll.
Fans of action movies with cerebral layers like Sicario will find much to appreciate in Soulcatcher. Markowicz delivers gripping set pieces while maintaining thoughtful subtext. At just over two hours, it never felt prolonged. I'd recommend checking it out if you're looking for an entertaining thriller with meaty performances and thought-provoking themes. Soulcatcher is one of the better action films of 2023 so far.
