Rating: ★★★1/2 (3.5/5 stars) Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening delivers a captivating origin story for Marinette/Ladybug and Adrien/Cat Noir. Directed by Thomas Astruc, the animated movie does a great job of bringing the beloved characters to life on the big screen.
Cristina Vee and Bryce Papenbrook are perfect voice casts as the shy Marinette and charming Adrien. You really feel their development from just meeting to realizing their feelings for each other, both in and out of the masks. Keith Silverstein is also creepily compelling as the mysterious Hawk Moth.
The animation is gorgeous, faithfully replicating the style of the TV show. The action sequences really sing, whether it's Ladybug and Cat Noir tag-teaming against anime-esque Akumas or larger clashes across Paris' scenic landmarks. Awakening also expands the Miraculous universe with interesting lore about the gems and their origins.
Younger fans of the series will be delighted, while older viewers will appreciate deeper themes of identity, trust and balancing normal teenage lives with superhero duties. At just over 90 minutes, it's a fun escapade that never felt too short. I expect Miraculous to attract both new and returning fans with this exciting movie chapter. If you or your kids love the show, Awakening is a must-watch.
