Directed by Scott Waugh, Hidden Strike is a tense action thriller that doesn't let up from the start. Featuring Jackie Chan and John Cena in a rare dramatic role, the movie provides some of the most gripping scenes of the year.
Escorting a group through the treacherous "Highway of Death" would be a challenge on its own, but the characters also face unexpected dangers at every turn. Waugh systematically ratchets up the stakes, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Both Chan and Cena are convincing as hardened vets pushed to their limits.
While the plot isn't overly complex, it functions perfectly as a vehicle to maximize the thrills. Every firefight is explosively choreographed and feels high-stakes. Waugh also finds quieter moments to flesh out the characters' backstories and motivations. This adds real heart to balance out the violent action.
At only 90 minutes, the lean runtime feels just right without dragging. Hidden Strike is a tightly paced and brilliantly executed modern action classic.
